Unlearning Narcissistic Traits
Purpose:
To help you unlearn narcissistic traits you may have picked up.
Instructions:
Step 1: Select a Narcissistic Trait You’ve Picked Up
For example:
– Difficulty handling criticism
– Envy
– Lack of accountability
Step 2: Research the Opposite
This means researching what the opposite of that would look like.
You can use YouTube, Google, or an AI tool like ChatGPT by asking:
“What would the opposite of [trait] look like in a healthy relationship?”
Step 3: Practice the Opposite in Real Life
For example, let’s go back to difficulty handling criticism.
One way to practice the opposite is to ask for feedback on purpose.
You could say to someone you trust:
“Is there anything I do that’s frustrating, or something I could improve?”
Then just listen.
Don’t explain.
Don’t defend.
Don’t justify.
Just take it in.
If you’re feeling stuck or unsure what to do to practice, try asking ChatGPT:
“What are some realistic ways I can practice [opposite behavior] in my day-to-day life?”
Final Thoughts:
There’s a huge difference between being a narcissist and having narcissistic traits.
Being a narcissist means having Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
It’s a fundamental part of who a person is, and it’s not something you can change.
Having narcissistic traits means you’ve picked up behaviors that are symptoms of the disorder.
But these are things you can become aware of and actively work to change.
So keep going.
You got this.
You can’t turn into a narcissist if you refuse to do what they do.
