Purpose:
To help you challenge the belief that you’re responsible for the narcissist’s well-being.
Instructions:
Step 1:
List as many real examples as you can of times they handled life without your help.
Examples:
– They kept their job without my help
– They went on a trip and managed everything themselves
– They cooked for themselves when I wasn’t around
In our opinion, the more specific these examples are, the better.
Step 2:
Keep this list somewhere easy to access — like the notes app on your phone.
Step 3:
Every time the thought “They need me” pops up, read the list.
Final Thoughts:
This can help break the automatic reflex to step back into the rescuer / caretaker role.
