Releasing Guilt


Purpose:

To help you release the guilt you’re experiencing.

Instructions:

Let’s start by understanding what that even means.

What does it mean to “stop feeling guilty”?

It means releasing the self-punishment and self-judgment you’ve been carrying around because of a decision you made or a perceived failure you have.

Step 1: Write the guilt in a single sentence

Examples:

  • “I feel guilty for leaving.”
  • “I feel guilty for saying no.”

Then ask:

“Did I actually do something wrong here?”

If you’re not sure, imagine someone you love came to you with this exact situation.

Would you tell them they did something wrong?

Step 2: Determine whether the guilt is warranted or misplaced

If you decided in Step One that you did something wrong, the guilt you’re feeling is warranted.

But if you decided you didn’t do anything wrong, the guilt is misplaced.

Step 3: Respond to the guilt

➤ If your guilt feels warranted, get a second opinion.

You don’t even have to do it face-to-face.

Go to Reddit, search “narcissistic abuse”, and click the “communities” tab.

Join one (it’s free), and write out what you feel guilty about, and explain why.

You’ll be surprised how many people have been where you are and can help you see the truth.

➤ If your guilt is misplaced, acknowledge it.

Grab a piece of paper or open the notes app and explain why your guilt is misplaced.

Do it the same way you would if someone you loved came to you with the exact same situation.

What would you say to help them see the truth the next time they feel guilty?

Then save this truth and read it the next time that guilt shows up.

Final Thoughts:

It will take some time to fully accept.

But this exercise helps you release the self-punishment and self-judgment (guilt) you’ve been carrying around.
