Internal Sense of Safety

Definition:

This means feeling fundamentally okay even though things are hard right now, and having confidence in your ability to safely navigate life’s challenges.

What to Do:

You need to identify what makes you feel unsafe.

Then practice exposing yourself to those triggers in small doses and slowly work your way up.

And use healthy coping strategies to stay regulated and grounded during those exposures.

Why:

When you know what makes you feel unsafe, you get a better idea of what you need to focus on when practicing and how to reduce your exposure to your triggers.

Feeling unsafe is a normal human experience.

But some people are better at responding to it than others.

There are many reasons for this, one of them being narcissistic abuse.

If you’ve experienced it, you may struggle to feel safe more than someone who hasn’t.

But don’t think of it as something that’s “wrong” with you, because it isn’t.

It’s a skill you get to build, not a flaw you have to carry.

And skills are something anyone can build with practice.

P.S.

The more you practice, the more you teach your body that safety is something you create — not something you wait for.

And that’s what an internal sense of safety is all about: feeling fundamentally okay even when things are uncertain, because you trust your ability to navigate through them safely.

Your lack of internal safety isn’t going to disappear overnight.

So it’s important to use healthy coping strategies whenever it feels too much.

That way you can move through it instead of getting stuck in it.
