Identifying Emotions

Definition:

You struggle to recognize, name, or understand what you’re feeling.

What to Do:

You need to identify what’s causing your difficulty identifying emotions.

Then practice recognizing, naming, and understanding your emotions when they come up.

And use healthy coping strategies whenever you feel unsure about what you’re feeling.

Why:

When you know why it’s difficult to identify your emotions, you get a better idea of what you need to focus on when practicing and how to make things easier moving forward.

Some people are better at identifying their emotions than others.

There are many reasons for this, one of them being narcissistic abuse.

If you’ve experienced it, you may struggle with identifying your emotions more than someone who hasn’t.

But don’t think of it as something that’s “wrong” with you, because it isn’t.

It’s a skill you get to build, not a flaw you have to carry.

And skills are something anyone can build with practice.

Your difficulty identifying emotions isn’t going to disappear overnight.

So it’s important to use healthy coping strategies when it comes up.

That way you can move through it instead of getting stuck in it.
