Gray Rocking

Hi, it’s Juliana!

Here’s everything I think you should know about Gray Rocking a narcissist:

Safety Warning:

There’s always a chance for narcissists to get physical when things aren’t going their way, so always prioritize your safety when communicating with them.

If you believe the Gray Rock Method will put you in physical danger, don’t use it.

1. What You SAY (keep it short)

Use flat, neutral answers like:

  • “Okay.”
  • “I see.”
  • “Hmm.”
  • “That’s noted.”
  • “I’ll think about it.”
  • “Got it.”

Avoid:

  • Explaining
  • Defending
  • Justifying
  • Arguing

As a general rule, if it’s more than one sentence, it’s too much.

2. How You SAY It

  • Calm voice
  • No sarcasm
  • No anger
  • No enthusiasm

Pretend you’re talking to a customer service rep you don’t care about.

No offense to the customer service reps out there <3

3. When They Push Your Buttons

They do not like the Gray Rock Method.

So they may:

  • Insult you
  • Guilt you
  • Play victim

But your response stays the same:

  • “I hear you.”
  • “Okay.”
  • “I got it.”

4. If They Ask Personal Questions

Give bland, surface-level answers.

Instead of:

“I’m stressed because my boss is unfair…”

Say:

“Work’s fine.”

5. Exit Strategies

If possible, you should always be looking for an exit:

  • “I have to go.”
  • “I’m busy right now.”
  • “We’ll talk later.”

No explanations.

6. The Mindset

  • You are not trying to be understood
  • You are not trying to fix them
  • You are protecting your energy

Gray Rocking isn’t a long-term solution to a narcissistic relationship of any kind.

It’s a short-term strategy to keep you as safe as possible.

So eventually, you should think about distancing yourself from this person as much as you can.

To your healing,

Juliana
